Freightos Baltic: Transpacific holds firm on tariff frontloading while Asia-Europe slides

Container spot rates edged lower overall this week, though Transpacific trade diverged from the broader decline as August 1 General Rate Increases (GRIs) and extended tariff frontloading provided renewed momentum. In contrast, Asia-Europe lanes continued to soften as peak season demand unwound further.
On the Transpacific, Asia-US East Coast spot rates remained locked at peak levels near $9,000/FEU, while West Coast daily rates spiked back above $7,000/FEU following carrier GRI implementations of $2,000–$3,000/FEU. US import demand is outperforming expectations as shippers continue frontloading ahead of potential Section 301 duty escalations following the July 24 expiration of global Section 122 tariffs.
Asia-Europe trades faced distinct downward pressure. Asia-Northern Europe and Asia-Mediterranean rates dropped to roughly $5,000/FEU and $6,000/FEU respectively—down 14% and 16% from their July peaks.
However, downside across all Asia-outbound lanes remains capped by severe port congestion in the Far East. Following Typhoon Noul in late July, operational backlogs and carrier port omissions continue to cause multi-day delays across Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.
On the macro front, geopolitical risk premiums eased after Oman brokered a tentative 60-day arrangement between Washington and Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. While crude prices have dropped 18% from late-July peaks, bunker fuel costs remain anchored 50% above pre-war baselines, preserving a high baseline operating cost for global shipping lines.
