TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS

PLANTS · SOUTH KOREA

South Korea’s H&L Advanced exits commodity HDPE film and yarn production as Daesan complex.

H&L Advanced has permanently discontinued commodity HDPE film and yarn grades at its Daesan complex, narrowing its portfolio to higher-margin specialty products amid persistent ethylene shortages and restricted downstream operations following the Lotte Daesan–HD Hyundai Chemical merger.

The producer continues to prioritise specialty grades, with limited PP and PE operations as the complex recovers from an earlier cracker shutdown. Although selected units are slated for brief trial runs, sustained commodity output remains uncertain.

The move signals a structural reduction in Daesan’s commodity HDPE export availability, leaving Southeast Asian buyers with tighter and more intermittent spot allocations heading into year-end.

China’s PVC rally accelerates on production cuts and futures

China’s domestic PVC prices climbed to multi-month highs up to 30 October, as prolonged production curtailments and firmer futures outweighed initial concerns over India’s preliminary CVD findings. Warehouse inventories recorded a third consecutive weekly decline to a fresh 13-month low, reinforcing supply-side support.

Export offers also extended their rally for a fourth straight week, with some Chinese suppliers suspending offers amid rapidly rising futures. However, overseas buyers began retreating as prices surged, following earlier deals to India at considerably lower levels.

With Indian CVD implementation still pending and winter approaching in northern China, the rally faces growing resistance from buyers questioning whether tightening supply can sustain further increases amid persistently lukewarm end-product demand.
