China's homo-PP tests five digits again, with methanol run putting durability in question

China's homo-PP market pushed through the five digit threshold on Thursday, touching levels last seen in early June in the third such test this year within a ten-week uptrend. A relentless methanol futures rally, more than crude, has driven the move, giving sellers confidence to hold firm even as buying interest lags, with end-users wary of chasing stretched values ahead of the holiday lull.

The rally also reflects a structural shift, with homo-PP holding a persistent premium over LLDPE film for over five months, a pattern uncommon before the conflict period. Export offers have moved in step, confirming the firmness extends beyond domestic trade.

The path forward hinges on whether methanol extends its run and whether post-holiday demand returns with enough conviction to hold prices above five digits, or the market repeats June's retreat.

Indonesian producer pushes through third hike of the week as crude tops $100

Indonesia's major producer completed a third round of PP and PE hikes on 10 September, extending a rally that oil above $100/bbl gave fresh justification to continue rather than pause. Cumulative weekly gains showed homo-PP leading the advance. Tight prompt availability and firm feedstock costs remain the core drivers, reinforced by bullish upstream cues.

Even so, cracks are showing in the tightness narrative. Regional production lines for both PE and PP lines are restarting or ramping up, all pointing to a looser regional balance ahead.

Whether that supply actually reaches buyers on schedule is the open question, with port congestion across the region threatening to delay deliveries even as output improves, keeping the rally's staying power in doubt.
