TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS

POLYETHYLENE · VIETNAM

Allocations runs dry as prompt availability vanish into supply vacuum

Vietnam's PE market opened September on a firmer footing as allocations across two PE grades on both domestic and import channels dried up despite elevated price tags, leaving prompt availability effectively exhausted. Middle Eastern producers sold out their monthly quotas at rising price levels, while South Korean suppliers stayed absent from the market altogether, stripping converters of a key alternative source.

The squeeze reflects logistics as much as scarcity, with typhoon-related port disruptions across the region and extended feeder delays compounding an already tight window. Firmer upstream costs are lending additional support underneath the move, while Vietnam's own supply gap stays structural with a domestic cracker still offline into next year.

PET BOTTLE ·  CHINA

Export offers for PET break above second-quarter levels in futures-driven rally

Export offers for Chinese PET surged past the $1,100/ton threshold this week, the highest level since late second quarter, as a rally in futures and upstream feedstock costs pushed producers to lift indications sharply. Buyer resistance forced sellers back from even higher testing levels, and with demand largely sluggish, the move is being described by producers themselves as entirely futures-driven rather than demand-led.

Domestic spot market tracked the gains, but downstream converters have pulled back from fresh buying as converters resist passing on higher packaging costs, leaving the physical market at a standstill even as prices rally. The firmer floor is also defended by supply-side curtailments.
