The US government on 25 October 2019 announced the suspension of some imported products originated from Thailand from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, claiming that Thailand has not taken steps to protect labor rights.

The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program allowed trading partners to export products to the USA without any import duties.

The suspension covers 573 products, of which 21 items are under the plastics heading with HS code – 39. In addition, all Thailand’s exports of seafood are removed from the duties-free treatment.

The new regulations are expected to take effect on 25 April 2020.
