Vietnam main port congested with 8000 containers of scraps

Saigon Newport Corporation in the recent media conference explained the congested condition in one of the country’s largest ports – Cai Lai Terminal, highlighting the pending for clearance of more than 8000 containers of scraps, including plastic and paper.

Out of 8000 containers, about 30% has been retaining at the port for more than 90 days and authorities are contacting related companies to proceed with the clearance. Meanwhile, port authorities are moving unclaimed containers to other storage areas to ensure the smooth operation at the main port.

“Many parcels was originally intended to China, however, due to the recent changes in import plastic scraps regulations in this country, destination ports are changed to Vietnam where environmental regulations remain lenient. We urge the related Ministries to take action to avoid Vietnam being a dumping ground for international scraps,” a director at Saigon Newport Corporation said.
