According to market sources, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical Co Ltd has experienced unexpected explosion on its pure benzene empty tank on 12 May 2018 afternoon.
Based in Shanghai, China, the company’s plants production capacities are as following:
1.09 million tons/year of ethylene
600,000 tons/year polyethylene (PE)
250,000 tons/year polypropylene (PP)
650,000 tons/year styrene monomer (SM)
300,000 tons/year Polystyrene (PS)
650,000 tons/year aromatics extraction
520,000 tons/year acrylonitrile (ACN)
180,000 tons/year butadiene extraction
A source closed to the company informed that this incident did not have much impact on its polyolefins supply, whereby Shanghai Secco usually outsource benzene and the incident happened on the empty storage tank of benzene. However, he commented that market might try to over exaggerate on the speculations toward the impact for PP and PE supply recently.
