Extreme cold weather hit the Northern Hemisphere since last week resulted in a series of petrochemical plants shutdowns across the world. The petchem sector in the USA, especially those located in Houston area has been affected badly, with several declared force majeure on PP, PE and propylene output due to equipment and electricity failure.

While there are no further details obtained on the USA plants status, both South Korean makers Korea Petrochemical Industry Co (KPIC) and SK Global Chemical are schedule to come back during this weekend. The short shutdown however, has not been taken lightly by industry sources, especially when the overall supply for propylene and ethylene is already very tight in Asia.
